San Francisco Local Bars
I have been a San Francisco resident for more than 15 years and have witnessed the drastic changes to the city. In the recent years, smaller, locally owned shops and bars are being replaced by condos and skyscrapers. The landscape of San Francisco is changing, but not without consequences. In 2017, after my favorite local spot shut its doors forever, I became determined to document similarly distinctive places before they disappeared.
The local bar has always served as a place where locals meet to tell stories and discuss the changing times. The bar is a reflection of the taste and relationship between patron and owner, between neighbors, between friends and strangers. The dusty decorations, the scrapes and scratches on the counter all help to tell a detailed history of an endangered place. My natural instinct, as a photographer, is to document and capture these places on film. My only hope is to play a small part in preserving these uniquely San Franciscan spots.
