Biography
Atsuko Morita was born in Osaka, Japan. She has been in the United States for 12 years. She graduated the Academy of Art University with a bachelor of Fine Arts in 2010. She Studied Advanced Gelatin Silver Printing at the Kyoto University of Art and Design in 2003.
Atsuko Morita has been privileged to journey throughout Asia, New Zealand and Canada. Travelling led to her interest in photography. Photography has been a means of herself-expression as a way to record her interactions with other cultures.
Atsuko Morita has substantial experience in the field of photography. Most recently, her photography was selected and exhibited in numerous shows including: 2016 Somervill Toy Camera Festival (MA), DIAL CALLECT at SOMArts (San Francisco, CA), TASTY at Cabrilo Gallery (Aptos, CA), PROOF at the Southern Exposure (San Francisco, CA), FOOD at the Center for Fine Art Photography (Fort Collins, CO) ,and 3rd Annual Juried Pinhole Show at the RayKo Photo Center (San Francisco, CA). In Japan, her photography has been exhibited in the Maronie Gallery and Ississ Gallery in Kyoto, Japan. She organized the Japan earthquake charity show in 2011 and participated in a AIDS LIFE CYCLE art show in 2014 (San Francisco, CA).
Atsuko Morita’s photographs have been published in prestigious publications including: Magical Secrets about Chine Colle by Crown Point Press in San Francisco, CA (2009), Roll Call by SF Camerawork in San Francisco (2010). She is the recipient of 3rd Prize and Honorable Mention in the Spring Fine Art Exhibitions at the Academy of Art University.
Atsuko Morita worked with traditional gelatin silver and dye coupler processes. She has also created images using alternative processes including cyanotype, gum bichromate, photo etching and platinum. She has photographed with small, medium and large format cameras. Currently, she is working with low-tech pinhole camera that she constructed out of a small block box with a pinhole. Her work is both private and public. She enjoys exploring the line that divides the two domains.
